In 1992, vocalist and sitarist/guitarist, Chris, together with mime artist, kathak dancer, and social worker, Jose, formed a core team with producer-engineer, Sebastian. With a background in social activism on the streets of his native Kerala in South India, Jose and Chris (who had grown up in Nepal) got their feet wet with some open air performances in Kathamandu. The band was named Olio, which means "variety show," and their first performances aptly matched that description, including mime, Hindi bhajans, Nepali folks songs, and rock and roll.

Between 1992 and 2001 the group recorded three studio albums, toured throughout India in a converted bus, operated the Bloomfountain Rock Club at Lynette's house in Lucknow every Friday, and welcomed band members from many parts of the world.

Over the years they were joined by tabla player, Lally (Kerry) from Kerala, keyboardist/bassist, James from Australia, bassist, Mike from Chennai, vocalist, Rajan from Nepal, guitarist, Temsu from Nagaland, percussionist, Sam from Kerala, percussionist, Jawahar from Tamil Nadu, drummer and bass guitarist, Hemendra (Hemzi) from Lucknow, vocalist, keyboardist, and saxophonist, Roney from Papua New Guinea, drummer Joshua from Ecuador, visual artist and singer-songwriter, Stefan from India, and singer-songwriter, Pete from USA. Jose' wife, Shelby, and Sebastian's wife, Elson, were also integral team members, and travelled with the band overland to many locations including Nagaland and Manipur in the Northeast. Sebastian and Elson's son, Nidhin, was born during this heavy touring season. Nikhil, their second son, along with Jose and Shelby's two children, Vineet and Varsha, were born towards the end of Olio's active touring period.

Olio performed anything from rock shows at universities, rock operas on the streets of Kathmandu, to intimate bhajan satsangs (nights of devotional song) in villages. Their first audio recording, "Video" (1994), was predominantly an English rock album. The two most popular songs on the album were devotional songs praising Yeshu (Jesus), one in Hindi called "Aparampar," and the other in Nepali, called "Surulurulu." The music video of "Aparampar" featured regularly on national television in the following years. "Surulurulu" was the only non-English language song on “The Great Indian Rock Volume 1," a compilation of original songs from bands all over India released by "The Rock Street Journal."

Encouraged by the popularity of the songs in Hindi and Nepali, OLIO recorded this album, "Naam Leo Re" (Take The Name). Though all the songs on the album are traditional Indian melodies, the styles represented vary from Indian folk and classical sounds, to rock and reggae. The songs on "Naam Leo Re" were written by bhajan composers Anil Dev, Peter John, and Garib Das, and arranged and recorded by OLIO. The original recordings by the composers are still available (though not easy to acquire) on various albums that they released in the late 1980's and early 1990's: "Naman" by Anil Dev, "Darpan" by Peter John, and "Pyare Masiha" by Garib Das and Friends.

In 2000, Chris left India to form the band "Aradhna" with Pete in Atlanta, USA. After the release of Aradhna’s debut album, "Deep Jale," Chris returned to India to work again with OLIO on a new project that would mix some of the influences of both the bands. The album was named"Aparampar" (2001). In addition to a new version of the song "Aparampar," the album included songs in Nepali sung by Chris, and songs in Urdu and Hindi composed and recorded by a close friend of Olio, guest artist and ghazal singer, Hasan.

Olio was an active band from 1992-2001. The musicians who lived together in the "Olio house" for two years or more included:
